Can You Have a Newborn Photoshoot Outside?

Featuring a Beautiful Session at Reffley Wood, King’s Lynn

When most people think of newborn photography, they picture cosy indoor settings—soft blankets, sleepy poses, and gentle lighting. But one of the questions I’m often asked is: “Can you have a newborn photoshoot outside?” The answer is a big, heartfelt yes—with the right timing, location, and care.

Recently, I had the joy of photographing a newborn session at Reffley Wood in King’s Lynn, and it was nothing short of magical. The combination of soft sunlight, earthy tones, and a gentle breeze through the trees created a calm, natural setting that complemented this little one perfectly. She was also a touch jaundiced so the bath of sunlight worked well!

Why Choose an Outdoor Newborn Photoshoot?

There’s something timeless and heartfelt about nature as a backdrop. Outdoor newborn sessions offer:

  • Natural light that brings a beautiful softness to your photos

  • Earthy, organic surroundings that suit my signature style perfectly

  • Relaxed, lifestyle moments—especially lovely for families who want a mix of portraits and candid interaction

  • A sense of connection to the season and environment your baby was born into

Of course, outdoor newborn sessions do require a few extra considerations—mainly weather, comfort, and age. I typically recommend outdoor sessions when your baby is at least 2–3 weeks old, as they’re a little more alert and tolerant to being out in the fresh air for a short period. We keep things simple, cosy, and baby-led, always prioritising their safety and comfort.

Reffley Wood: A Hidden Gem in King’s Lynn

This particular session at Reffley Wood was filled with warmth and gentle sunlight filtering through the trees. It’s one of my favourite spots in the area—peaceful, tucked away, and rich with natural textures. The new parents were so relaxed, and baby was wrapped up snugly, sleeping contentedly in the quiet of the woodland.

We embraced natural posing—capturing mum and dad cradling baby close, soft forehead kisses, and quiet snuggles. With just a few neutral wraps and light layering, we created timeless images that felt earthy, real, and full of love. I really liked that there was a boardwalk, which created some different texture amongst the greenery and it wasn't too far for the new mum who is postpartum to have to walk!

Thinking of an Outdoor Newborn Session?

If you’re drawn to nature and love the idea of capturing your baby in a peaceful, outdoor setting, I’d love to chat. Outdoor sessions are best booked for spring through early autumn when the weather is milder. Together, we’ll choose a location that feels right for your family—whether that’s a wood, meadow, or even your own garden.

Newborns don’t stay little for long, but their photos can last a lifetime. Whether indoors or outside, it’s all about preserving the gentle beauty of these early days.
